Supernova Explosion Simulation

A 3D supernova explosion simulation generated by the Burrows' group. 

The core is the birthed neutron star, the outer shell is the emerging shock wave, and the map is a color map in specific entropy.  The overall scale is ~4000 kilometers on a side and the time after core bounce is but ~500 milliseconds.  The explosion is accompanied by a characteristic gravitational wave signature upon which is stamped the violent dynamical early phases of the neutron star's birth and the launching of the supernova itself. This phase is only the beginning in an hours-long journey of the shock wave to the progenitor star surface and the centuries-long saga of the development and evolution of the supernova in the interstellar medium and the galaxy.
